How to Press DTF Transfers with a Home Iron

Ink Rush Transfers Home Iron Guide

Press DTF Transfers with a Home Iron

A home iron can be used for DTF transfers with the right technique, firm pressure, dry heat, and patience.

For best results, use a heat press when possible. If you are using a home iron, follow the steps below and work in small sections when needed.

Home Iron Basics

Use dry heat only, strong downward pressure, and avoid sliding the iron across the design.

Home Iron DTF Pressing Steps

Press straight down, use firm pressure, and avoid sliding the iron. Larger designs may need to be pressed in sections.

1

Place & Prep

Position the DTF transfer on the desired area of the garment and cover it before pressing.

  • Place the transfer on the garment
  • Cover with parchment paper or kraft paper
  • Pre-iron blank garment for 5 seconds if creased
2

Press with Iron

Select the closest heat setting to the recommended guide below and apply strong, consistent pressure.

  • Use dry heat only
  • Do not use steam
  • Press straight down
  • Work in small sections if needed
  • Avoid sliding the iron
3

Peel

Allow the transfer to cool slightly before carefully removing the PET film.

  • Peel type: Cool peel recommended
  • Peel slowly from one corner
  • If the design lifts, re-cover and apply heat again
  • Allow to cool and peel once more
4

Second Press

Cover the design and press again to help lock in the transfer and improve durability.

  • Time: 15 seconds
  • Pressure: Firm and even
  • Teflon sheet for shiny finish
  • Parchment or kraft paper for matte finish

Finished!

Your custom garment is ready to wear, gift, or sell. For best durability, allow the garment to rest before the first wash whenever possible.

Temperature & Time Guide

If your iron has adjustable heat, select the setting closest to the recommendations below.

Cotton325°F20 seconds
50/50 Blend300°F15 seconds
Tri-Blend275°F15 seconds
Polyester275°F10 seconds

Important: Apply strong, consistent pressure. Do not rely on steam. Use dry heat only. Home irons do not provide even heat like a heat press, so results may vary by iron brand and garment type.

Important Home Iron Notes

Use these notes to avoid incomplete adhesion, lifting edges, uneven pressure, and garment issues.

Pressure & Technique

A home iron requires patience and strong manual pressure. Press in sections for larger transfers so each area receives enough heat and pressure.

  • Use maximum pressure.
  • Press straight down.
  • Do not slide the iron.
  • Press in sections for larger designs.
  • Use parchment paper or kraft paper as a cover sheet.

What to Avoid

Uneven surfaces can stop the transfer from bonding correctly. Keep the pressing surface flat and avoid raised garment areas.

  • Avoid zippers, seams, buttons, pockets, and collars.
  • Do not use steam.
  • Do not use a soft ironing board that absorbs pressure.
  • Do not peel too early if the transfer needs more cooling time.
  • Do not rush large designs.
